Dodgeball Rules

The Team
Teams will be made up of 6-10 players. Six players will compete on a side (teams must have 2 males and 2 females); others will be available as substitutes. Substitutes may enter the game only during timeouts or in the case of injury.

The Game
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them “OUT”. This may be done by:
1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball below the neck.
2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground.

Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, another ball, another player, official or other item outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc)

Boundaries
During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may leave the boundaries only to retrieve stray balls.

The Opening Rush
Game begins by placing the dodgeballs along the center line – three (3) on one side of the center hash and three (3) on the other. Players then take a position behind their end line. The game begins by one team shouting “Ready, Set, Dodgeball!” at which point teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls. This signal officially starts the contest. Teams may only retrieve the three (3) balls to their right of the center hash. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line before it can be legally thrown.

Timing And Winning A Game
The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 10-minute time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the 10 minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner.  If both teams have the same number of players remaining the next team to eliminate a player will be the winner.

Time-Outs & Substitutions
Each team will be allowed one (1) 30 second timeout per game. At this time a team may substitute players into the game.

10-Second Violation
In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team holds a ball for more than 10 seconds.

Rule Enforcement
During matches, rules will be enforced primarily by the “honour system”*. Players will be expected to rule whether or not a hit was legal or whether they were legally eliminated. There will be an Active Diversions staff member on site to settle disputes.

General Play
• Players try to hit opposing players below the neck with the ball. If a player is hit, they are out, and must go sit off to the side.
• If a player catches a ball that was thrown at them, the player who threw it is out.
• If a ball hits the floor, wall or other object (e.g. basketball net), it is dead and anyone that is hit with the ball after it is dead is safe.
• If a player attempts to catch a thrown ball and fails (and does touch the ball), they are out. If a player attempts to catch it and then it hits the wall or another object, they are out.
• If a ball deflects off one person, but is caught by a teammate, they are both safe.
• If each team only has one player left in a game, they have one minute to eliminate the other. If one is not eliminated after one minute, each team will add one more player.
• Players cannot hide behind a bench or other objects. If a ball goes out of play, one player may go get it but must return to action immediately.
• If a player from team A throws the ball and hits a player from Team B and the ball rebounds off the player back onto Team A’s side, the ball is considered dead. Therefore, the player from Team B is out. This is even the case if a Player on Team A catches the rebound. Otherwise, someone could claim that since Team A caught it before it hit the ground, the player on Team B is safe. This also means that if the ball rebounded off of Player B and back onto Team A’s side and hit a player on Team A, that player is safe.
• Players can only throw the ball at the other team. Kicking or spiking the ball is not permitted.
• A ball held in a players hand is considered part of their body. Therefore if the ball a player is holding is hit by the opposing teams ball they are out (NO Blocking with other balls!)
